Marlene and I just became friends recently when she joined me on my adventure to Paris Fashion Week. I’m used to going alone but is was so much more fun running around the city on hurting feet with this gorgeous partner in crime, and of course sharing éclairs and a bottle of wine while spending nights on the computer. She is a lovely and smart lady and has a fantastic sense for style. She just knows what she likes, her things fit and match her and have the right amount of personality, she is basically super comfortable with who she is. I think this is something that happens to women in their thirties ? Maybe sometimes sooner or later (I’m still surprising myself with strange fashion choices at 33).
So I went to Marlene’s house the other day to photograph her closet and some other pretty things and maybe to get some advice. I was surprised to find a fairly small amount of clothes, I expected piles and piles and things falling out of the closet. Instead she has a good amount of very well-chosen pieces, and she gets rid of things she doesn’t wear. On one-hand some pretty feminine dresses and blouses on the other hand some more boyish looks which she loves for easy daily chic. Mostly plain colors, whites, greys, blues, almost no patterns but then she adds her own thing with a strong red or gold and animal print high heels or a hat. She loves to steal her boyfriend’s shirts and recommends buying sweaters in the men’s section. The other thing that surprised me was that not everything in Marlene’s closet is expensive. Yes, there is that beautiful Marc by Marc Jacobs dress and Acne blouse but then she totally rocks her Zara shoes and Cheap Monday’s shirt. It’s all about mixing what works for you and staying true to your personality.
